Iberian lynx

Concrete actions

Following five confirmed visual sightings of Iberian lynx in the Melides area, SALVADOR has initiated contact with the ICNF (Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas), the governmental body responsible for the protection and management of the Iberian lynx in Portugal.
According to ICNF, what is currently needed are reliable indicators of the lynx’s presence — including efforts to estimate the number of individuals, and to determine whether these animals are simply passing through or establishing themselves.
It was agreed that, at this stage, the most effective approach is to actively involve the local community. To this end, we will:
Display posters in all local shops, restaurants, and public areas, inviting residents and visitors to report any lynx sightings.
Notify ICNF immediately upon receiving relevant information.
If presence is confirmed, initiate the community communication strategy successfully used in Mértola.
Together, we can help ensure the safe return and preservation of this iconic species in our natural landscape.
