About Us

Reason for being

Salvador is a non-profit association whose goal is
to preserve, promote, and publicize
the natural, cultural, and human heritage of the Alentejo.

Why Salvador?

We chose the name Salvador in honor of Salvador, the last traditional miller of the Melides region.
His two windmills—and the humble house where he lived—still stand quietly along Estrada da Boa Vista. When he passed away in 2012, more than 500 years of tradition, craftsmanship, and cultural memory in the ancient art of wind-powered milling faded with him.
But we believe this loss was not inevitable. It happened because we allowed it to.
We refuse to let the same fate befall other precious parts of our heritage.
Through Salvador, we are committed to protecting and reviving the living soul of our culture—before more of it disappears.
